Natal chart calculator
Enter the date, time and place of birth to cast your natal chart, also called a birth chart: the planets in their signs and houses, the Ascendant and Midheaven, and the aspects between the planets. Positions come from NASA/JPL-grade ephemeris data.
How to use the birth chart calculator
- Press the chart’s title to open its form, enter the place, date and time of birth, then press Update. Without an account, re-casts are limited; past the limit, Update asks you to create one.
- Pick the house system in the same form. Placidus is the default; Koch, Equal, Whole Sign, Porphyry and Regiomontanus are in the same menu.
- Read the wheel and the Aspects card in the analysis panel. To see another moment, tap the day, month, year, hour or minute in the date bar under the chart.
Tips for entering birth data
- Use the time on the birth certificate or hospital record; remembered times are often rounded.
- Enter the local clock time at the birthplace. Time zones and daylight saving time, historical changes included, are applied for you.
- If your village is missing from the 170,000 places, pick the nearest town and correct the coordinates with Edit. If the time is unknown, leave it empty and the chart is cast without houses.
What an astrology chart shows
An astrology chart is the sky at one moment as seen from one place. The moment fixes the planets in the zodiac; the place fixes the houses and the four angles (Ascendant, Descendant, Midheaven and IC), which is what a relocation chart changes.
How to read a birth chart
Start with the Sun, the Moon and the Ascendant, then read in layers:
- Planets: what is acting, from the Sun and Moon to Pluto.
- Signs: how it acts, by element and mode.
- Houses: where it acts, from the 1st house of the self to the 12th of what is hidden.
- Angles: the most sensitive points; a planet close to one is emphasized.
- Aspects: the relationships between planets, drawn as lines on the wheel and listed in the Aspects card.
What the planets mean in a birth chart
Each planet stands for one part of a life. Its sign says how that part acts, its house where.
| Planet | What it stands for |
|---|---|
| Sun | Vitality, the self, recognition |
| Moon | The body, moods, home |
| Mercury | The mind, speech, study and trade |
| Venus | Love, pleasure and art |
| Mars | Drive, courage and conflict |
| Jupiter | Growth, faith and opportunity |
| Saturn | Limits, duty, time and delays |
| Uranus | Sudden change and independence |
| Neptune | Imagination and confusion |
| Pluto | Intensity and crises |
Zodiac signs: element, mode and ruler
Every sign has an element, a mode and a ruling planet. The element gives its temperament, the mode its way of acting, and the ruler is the planet that answers for it. The rulers below are the traditional ones.
| Sign | Element | Mode | Ruler |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Fire | Cardinal | Mars |
| Taurus | Earth | Fixed | Venus |
| Gemini | Air | Mutable | Mercury |
| Cancer | Water | Cardinal | Moon |
| Leo | Fire | Fixed | Sun |
| Virgo | Earth | Mutable | Mercury |
| Libra | Air | Cardinal | Venus |
| Scorpio | Water | Fixed | Mars |
| Sagittarius | Fire | Mutable | Jupiter |
| Capricorn | Earth | Cardinal | Saturn |
| Aquarius | Air | Fixed | Saturn |
| Pisces | Water | Mutable | Jupiter |
Sun sign and Moon sign
Your Sun sign is the sign the Sun was in at birth, your Moon sign the sign the Moon was in. Point at or tap a planet on the wheel to see its sign and degree. The Moon moves about 13° a day, so without a birth time its sign can be uncertain.
How to find your rising sign
Your rising sign is the sign on the Ascendant, rising over the eastern horizon at birth; the wheel marks it as Asc, with its degree. The Ascendant crosses a sign in about two hours, so a birth time a few minutes off can change it.
The 12 houses in astrology
The houses divide the chart into twelve sectors from the time and place of birth. The house system you choose moves the cusps, and without a birth time there are no houses.
| House | What it rules |
|---|---|
| 1st house | Body, character, first impression |
| 2nd house | Money and possessions |
| 3rd house | Siblings, neighbors, short trips |
| 4th house | Home, family, roots |
| 5th house | Children, pleasure, creativity |
| 6th house | Daily work and health |
| 7th house | Partners and open adversaries |
| 8th house | Shared money, debts, crises |
| 9th house | Long journeys, study, beliefs |
| 10th house | Career and reputation |
| 11th house | Friends and hopes |
| 12th house | Retreat and what is hidden |
Birth chart terms and meanings
A birth chart reading runs on a short vocabulary. These are its words, and where the chart shows them.
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Ascendant (Asc) | The degree of the zodiac rising on the eastern horizon at birth, and the cusp of the 1st house. The wheel marks it Asc. |
| Descendant (Dsc) | The degree setting on the western horizon, opposite the Ascendant, and the cusp of the 7th house. |
| Midheaven (MC) | The degree of the zodiac at the top of the sky at birth. In Placidus, Koch, Porphyry and Regiomontanus it is also the cusp of the 10th house. |
| IC | The point opposite the Midheaven, at the bottom of the chart; in the same house systems, the cusp of the 4th house. |
| House cusp | The line where a house begins. The house system decides where the cusps fall. |
| Aspect | An angle between two planets that counts in a reading. The major aspects are the conjunction (0°), sextile (60°), square (90°), trine (120°) and opposition (180°). |
| Orb | How far from exact an aspect may be and still count. With an account, you set the natal orbs in Settings. |
| Retrograde | A planet that seems to move backward through the zodiac, as seen from Earth. |
| Chart ruler | The planet that rules the sign on the Ascendant. |
| Aspect pattern | A figure of several aspects, such as a Grand Trine or a T-Square. Paid plans list them in the Patterns card. |
| Tropical zodiac | The zodiac measured from the spring equinox, the one AstroProcessor uses. |

Frequently asked questions
What does the natal chart calculator include?
AstroProcessor casts the wheel and shows planets, houses, aspects and angles. It opens on the current moment. Without an account, re-casts are limited; an account saves your charts and opens Chart Info and Positions. Paid plans open Patterns and Advanced, and the analysis of forecasts.
What is the difference between a natal chart and a birth chart?
None. Both names mean the chart cast for the moment and place of birth. “Astrology chart” is the general term for a chart cast for any moment.
Do I need an account to make a birth chart?
No. The calculator casts a chart without an account. Without one, re-casts are limited; an account saves your charts and removes the limit.
Do I need an exact birth time?
Yes, for the houses and the Ascendant. If the time is unknown, leave the field empty: the chart is drawn without houses, and the planets’ signs and aspects stay usable, apart from the Moon, which moves about 13° a day.
Why is my chart different from another site’s?
Usually because of the house system, the birth time or the time zone. AstroProcessor uses Placidus houses by default, while some sites use Whole Sign. It also uses the tropical zodiac, so sites that use a sidereal zodiac put the planets in different signs.
How accurate are the planetary positions?
Positions come from NASA/JPL-grade ephemeris data, the astronomical source professional astrology software relies on. In practice the limit is the accuracy of the birth time.
Which house systems can I use?
Placidus (the default), Koch, Equal, Whole Sign, Porphyry and Regiomontanus. At 66° latitude and beyond, Placidus, Koch and Regiomontanus are replaced by Equal houses, and the analysis panel marks the chart “Polar chart (Equal houses)”.
Does AstroProcessor use the tropical or the sidereal zodiac?
The tropical zodiac, measured from the spring equinox, as Western astrology reads it. A sidereal zodiac is not offered.
What is the difference between a natal chart and a horary chart?
A natal chart is cast for the moment and place of a birth and read for a whole life. A horary chart is cast for the moment a question is asked and understood, and answers that one question.
