How to read astrocartography lines

An astrocartography map draws a line wherever one of your planets sat on an angle of the chart at the moment you were born. This guide shows how to read a line, then gives the meaning of all 44, four for each planet, in the words AstroProcessor’s map uses.

What astrocartography lines are

An astrocartography map lays a birth chart over the Earth. Each line marks the places where one planet was rising, setting, at its highest point or at its lowest point at the moment of birth. AstroProcessor draws 44 lines, four each for the Sun, the Moon, Mercury to Pluto and the North Node, computed in mundo from NASA/JPL-grade ephemeris data.

Many guides write the rising and setting lines as AC and DC. They are the same lines; on AstroProcessor’s map their badges read ASC and DSC.

The four angles: ASC, DSC, MC and IC lines

The angle says where in life a line shows. The planet says what turns up there.

ASC line: the Ascendant

The planet was rising. It colors your body and energy and the way you come across, and it is the line of new starts.

DSC line: the Descendant

The planet was setting. It works through partners, clients and the people you deal with closely, conflicts included.

MC line: the Midheaven

The planet was at its highest point. It shows in career, reputation and your public role.

IC line

The planet was at its lowest point. It acts on home, family, roots and private life.

How to read an astrocartography line

A line amplifies the planet as it is in your birth chart. A planet in good shape there becomes a resource on its line; a planet under strain brings the same strain, louder. A planet’s name decides nothing on its own: a Venus line can be hard work, and a Saturn line can build a career.

The closer a place lies to a line, the stronger the line reads there. Each planet has its own orb, measured east or west along the place’s parallel, and a degree of longitude shrinks toward the poles: 111 km at the equator, 79 km at 45° and 56 km at 60° latitude. No single distance works everywhere.

A city rarely sits on one line. Where two lines run close to the same city, both planets act there, each in its own character.

  1. Read the line’s badge: it names the planet and the angle.
  2. Take the area of life from the angle and the theme from the planet.
  3. Look at that planet in your birth chart: its sign, house and aspects decide whether the line brings out its best or its worst.
  4. Check how close the place is to the line, and which other lines run nearby.

Sun lines in astrocartography

The Sun’s lines are about recognition and vitality.

Sun — ASC line

All eyes on you. The place puts you in the spotlight. Confidence comes faster, people look twice, and self-presentation turns into a talent. The bill arrives as vanity: ambition inflates quicker than the results that should back it.

Sun — DSC line

Bright partners, a shared spotlight. You show up through other people. Bright, creative or high-status partners arrive, and in a couple or a deal you read as the one in charge. Then the question of who shines comes up: dependence on the partner, or two egos in one frame.

Sun — MC line

Your name becomes the brand. Career ambition turns up loud. Leadership, publicity and a career built on your own name come within reach, in media, management, production, fashion or the creative industries, and well-known people enter the frame. This line wants you as the face of the project.

Sun — IC line

Home becomes headquarters. Family, roots and a base of your own take the center. A household starts, a property gets bought, a business runs from the kitchen table; real estate, interiors and hospitality belong here. The catch is a contest over who leads at home.

Moon lines in astrocartography

The Moon’s lines are about home and moods.

Moon — ASC line

Reading every room. Sensitivity to people and atmosphere goes up. You read moods fast and answer them faster, and others feel it as warmth. The other side is a mood that changes with the weather of the room.

Moon — DSC line

Looking for care in a partner. Relationships become where you look for care and emotional backup. Partners and clients feel close quickly. The same closeness makes the bond changeable: moods set the temperature of the partnership, and the temperature swings.

Moon — MC line

A career built on care. Mood and career are tied together: recognition steadies you, and its absence does not. Work around people’s everyday needs pays off, from hospitality and food to healthcare, HR and childcare. When the job stops feeling safe or alive, expect a change of direction.

Moon — IC line

The place that feels like home. One of the Moon’s most natural placements. Home, family and belonging take the lead, and the place can start to feel like where you come from. It suits putting down roots, living near your people, and work in real estate, food, hospitality or a family business.

Mercury lines in astrocartography

Mercury’s lines are about study and trade.

Mercury — ASC line

Quick, curious, talkative. You get faster: in conversation, in thought, in settling into a new place. Curiosity picks up, and people often read you as younger than you are. The cost is restlessness, too many tabs open at once.

Mercury — DSC line

Negotiation and sharp partners. The talent is the deal: negotiating, advising, finding the compromise both sides can sign. Your circle widens with intellectual and business partners, and conversation becomes what holds every relationship together.

Mercury — MC line

A career in information. Career runs on information. IT, media, marketing, analytics, consulting, logistics and product management fit, and you can carry several projects and roles at once. What gets rewarded is fast triage: seeing first what matters.

Mercury — IC line

The home office. Thinking moves indoors. Remote work, an online business, study from home or a home studio make sense, and so does paperwork: property deals, family documents, archives. Questions about where your family comes from start asking for answers.

Venus lines in astrocartography

Venus’s lines are about love and art.

Venus — ASC line

Charm, turned up. Attractiveness and charm go up, and so does attention to how you look. Social life and relationships move to the front of the calendar. People answer you with warmth before you have said much.

Venus — DSC line

Love and partnership. The classic relationship house. Acquaintances, partnerships and social life multiply, and the people who arrive tend to be pleasant, creative and diplomatic. Love, collaboration and marriage all live here.

Venus — MC line

A career in taste and diplomacy. Career runs on charm and taste. Fashion, beauty, luxury, design, branding, PR, diplomacy and premium service fit, and earning power tends to rise. Results come through cooperation rather than pressure, and the right introductions do the rest.

Venus — IC line

A home worth coming back to. The urge is to make home lovely and keep it peaceful. Renovation, decor, a garden, property bought or rented out all come up, and the family atmosphere tends to soften. Interiors, architecture, hospitality and real estate work as a living.

Mars lines in astrocartography

Mars’s lines are about drive and conflict.

Mars — ASC line

Initiative with a short fuse. You get bolder. Initiative and competitiveness rise, sport and physical challenge pull, decisions come faster. So does the temper. Friction in conversation and a bigger appetite for risk come with the package: watch the body as well as the mouth.

Mars — DSC line

Forceful partners, open rivals. The people who arrive are active and forceful. Partnerships run on competition, and couples, contracts and rivalries all get louder. Arguments come more often, and a power struggle sits close to the surface.

Mars — MC line

Ambition at full speed. Career ambition hits top speed. Entrepreneurship, engineering, construction, security, emergency work and sport fit, along with any job that pays for decisiveness under pressure. Promotion can come fast. So do clashes with superiors and competition that plays rough.

Mars — IC line

Renovating, building, arguing at home. The drive goes into the home: renovation, construction, reshaping the space, a gym in the spare room. Property becomes a project. Tension with relatives runs higher, and the house itself asks for care: fire, wiring, tools and equipment.

Jupiter lines in astrocartography

Jupiter’s lines are about growth and opportunity.

Jupiter — ASC line

Bigger, brighter, more confident. You take up more room. Openness, optimism and social ease grow, and people meet you with goodwill. Excess grows with them: self-regard, appetite and weight all run up.

Jupiter — DSC line

Influential partners. Partnerships widen and rise in rank. Successful, influential or well-educated partners appear, in love and in business. Collaboration and useful introductions are the currency of this place.

Jupiter — MC line

Promotion and patronage. Career grows in scale and status. Corporations, public administration, law, finance, consulting and international business fit, with support from superiors and influential people. A more visible post comes within reach. Reputation and ethics carry real weight here.

Jupiter — IC line

A bigger home, a steadier base. Home expands: more space, better conditions, property bought as an investment, sometimes a growing family. Real estate, development and land work as a living. Family support grows, and so does pride in where you come from. A line for a calm, comfortable life.

Saturn lines in astrocartography

Saturn’s lines are about work, discipline and delays.

Saturn — ASC line

Serious, disciplined, older than your years. You turn serious. Discipline and self-organization improve, long-term goals get a plan, and people may read you as older than you are. The weight arrives too: pessimism, and a sense of carrying a constant load.

Saturn — DSC line

Serious, formal partnerships. Relationships get serious and contracts get formal. Older, more established or more demanding partners arrive, in love and in business. What forms here is built to last, and it can feel more like an obligation than a choice.

Saturn — MC line

A slow, solid climb. Career becomes a long climb, slow and steady. Large companies, government, finance, law, engineering, construction and management fit, wherever order and accountability matter. Leadership comes with it. So do the workload, a strict hierarchy and an austere routine.

Saturn — IC line

Duty to the family home. Home turns into a responsibility: aging parents, an old property to restore, family assets to manage. Construction, restoration and long-term property investment fit. You build the steadiest base you can and set firm rules inside it. The price is a heavy atmosphere at home.

Uranus lines in astrocartography

Uranus’s lines are about sudden change.

Uranus — ASC line

A new image, overnight. Image, habits and lifestyle change sharply. You get more independent, more original and harder to ignore. Impulsiveness comes with it, along with a higher chance of the unexpected.

Uranus — DSC line

Unusual partners, sudden turns. The people around you change abruptly. Unusual, independent, freedom-loving partners arrive, and relationships form and break fast. Quick meetings, sudden exits and arrangements outside the usual formats all belong to this place.

Uranus — MC line

Career reboot. Career takes a sharp turn, sometimes into a new profession altogether. Tech, AI, startups, R&D, new media and running a company of your own fit. Rigid hierarchy does not. The classic corporate track is the first thing this line questions.

Uranus — IC line

Home on your own terms. Family rules stop applying. You want to live on your own terms, which can mean sudden moves, co-living, a remote lifestyle or a home run like an experiment. Independence grows. A stable, predictable household gets harder to hold.

Neptune lines in astrocartography

Neptune’s lines are about imagination and confusion.

Neptune — ASC line

Magnetic and hard to pin down. You become softer, more sensitive and harder to read, and people find that magnetic. Moods register before words do. Boundaries blur too: self-deception, and the urge to be seen as someone else, come with the glamour.

Neptune — DSC line

Partners through a soft filter. It gets hard to see people clearly. Creative, spiritual or support-seeking partners arrive, and a relationship can feel fated. Idealization is the danger, and the question of whom to trust stays open longer than it should.

Neptune — MC line

A career built on atmosphere. Career runs on intuition and a feel for the audience. Film, photography, music, fashion, creative direction, wellness and work at sea fit, anywhere image and mood matter more than procedure. The goal itself can blur, along with who exactly you answer to.

Neptune — IC line

A quiet home by the water. The pull is toward a calm, secluded, carefully made home, ideally near water. A home studio, remote creative work and meditation fill the days. Family history goes hazy and the past looks better than it was. So might this place, at first.

Pluto lines in astrocartography

Pluto’s lines are about intensity and crises.

Pluto — ASC line

Intensity and influence. You become more intense, more perceptive and harder to ignore. Influence grows, and people sense the power before you use it. The shadow is control: manipulation, all-or-nothing moves, extremes.

Pluto — DSC line

Intense, dominant partners. Relationships go intense. Strong, dominant people arrive, in love and in business, and every partnership tests who holds the power. Dependency, jealousy and control are what to watch for.

Pluto — MC line

Career at the center of power. Career moves toward power and high stakes. Banking, investment, M&A, restructuring, security, investigations and crisis management fit, wherever the information is confidential and the pressure heavy. Influence grows. So do abrupt turning points and fights for control.

Pluto — IC line

The family system, rebuilt. Home and family get rebuilt from the foundations. Family secrets, inheritance, property and old power dynamics come to the surface, and a major change of residence is possible. The prize is freedom from old family patterns. The price is a power struggle on the way there.

North Node lines in astrocartography

The North Node’s lines are about direction and increase.

North Node — ASC line

Learning to act alone. Your own will is the lesson. The place asks you to decide without waiting for a partner’s approval, form your own opinion and act on it. Leaning on others for every step runs out of road.

North Node — DSC line

Learning partnership. The other person is the lesson. Compromise, listening and equal partnership are the skills this place teaches, and the defining events come through marriage, business partners and close alliances. The solo route closes.

North Node — MC line

Stepping into a public role. Vocation is the assignment. The place pushes you out of the private world and into responsibility: a profession, a position, work that matches who you are. The lesson is doing what is required, even after the interest fades.

North Node — IC line

A home with a heart. Home is the assignment: family, warmth, time with the people closest to you. Career and duty step back while you learn to relax and be yourself. The point is giving the home real content, beyond the right form.

Line meanings on your own map

Open the astrocartography map with your birth data and pick a city in the Place reading card. It lists the lines that reach that city, each with the meaning given on this page, and how strongly it reads there. When the map also draws the intermediate house-cusp lines, the card reads those too, by their house.

Frequently asked questions

What do AC, DC, MC and IC mean in astrocartography?

They are the four angles of the chart. AC (ASC on AstroProcessor’s map) marks where a planet was rising at the moment of birth, DC (DSC) where it was setting, MC where it was at its highest and IC where it was at its lowest.

Are Saturn, Mars and Pluto lines bad?

Their lines are traditionally read as more demanding, and the meanings above name what each one costs. A line amplifies the planet as it is in your chart, though: a Saturn in good shape on the MC can build a lasting career.

Which astrocartography line is best for love?

DSC lines describe partners, and Venus and the Moon are the planets of love. Whether a Venus DSC line helps depends on Venus in your chart: a strong Venus is a resource there, a strained one is the same strain, louder.

Which astrocartography line is best for career?

MC lines describe career and reputation, and the Sun, Jupiter and Saturn are the planets read most often there. Whether an MC line helps depends on that planet in your chart: a strong planet is a resource on its line, a strained one is the same strain, louder.

How many lines are on an astrocartography map?

AstroProcessor’s map draws 44: an ASC, DSC, MC and IC line for each of the Sun, the Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto and the North Node.

How close to a line do I need to live?

There is no universal distance. Each planet has its own orb, and the closer the place, the stronger the line. A degree of longitude is 111 km at the equator and 56 km at 60° latitude.

Do I need an exact birth time?

Yes. Every line depends on the angles, and a birth time four minutes off moves every line by one degree of longitude, about 111 km at the equator.
